It took BMW a good seven years to come up with an all electric vehicle after the i3 but better late than never, the German auto maker now seems to have its next EV in its arsenal. A recent teaser image shared by the firm confirms this, as the OEM gets ready to unveil the i4 at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show next month.
The i4 comes as a part of the 3 battery EVs promised by the car maker to be launched within the two years. A 4-door all-electric Gran Coupe, the i4 itself is expected to enter production next year. Which also means that the ¡°concept¡± to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show will be an accurate representation of the production model.
Just like the other two EVs poised to be launched by 2021, the i4 is based on BMW¡¯s upcoming fifth-generation electric powertrain. The car, hence promises a better range as well as performance than BMW ¡®s prevalent electric vehicles.
As for the other aspects of the car, BMW says that the i4 comes with ¡°a modern, elegantly sporty design with the spaciousness and practicality of a four-door Gran Coupe¡±. Some of it can even be guessed by a look at the teaser image.
Performance of the i4 is backed by an 80 kWh battery that claims a range of up to 600 km on a single charge. That, however, is the one based on WLTP and the real world range might be just north of 450 km.
The electric motor powering the i4 is equally impressive. As per BMW, it is able to deliver a maximum output of around 390 kW (530 hp). The company even claims an acceleration of zero to 100 kmph in close to 4 seconds as well as a top speed of more than 200 kmph.
?Interestingly enough, BMW will be using its next generation charging unit on the i4. That will enable a charging of up to 150 kW for the electric Gran Coupe. BMW claims it to be enough for around an 80 percent charge in 35 minutes. That also equates to a 100 km range in under six minutes.
BMW i4 is one of the three battery electric vehicles that the company will be bringing to production by 2021. The other two - BMW iX3, an all-electric SUV and the BMW i4, an all-electric sedan, will be going on sale by the end of this year and the next respectively.
