The infamous matchmaker Sima Taparia has come under fire once again for her regressive comments about marriages and the rise in divorces.
In an interview with Mashable, she mentioned that people who seek divorces are egotistical. She said, "Those whom I have matched haven¡¯t taken a divorce yet. But if it happened, it is because they don¡¯t have patience, flexibility, willingness to adjust, and egoism. That¡¯s how problems are created. They don¡¯t have the values of giving, sharing, and caring."
As if this wasn't enough, she then went on a rant and blamed 'educated' women for taking a stand and not complying with the societal standards that have not evolved over the years. She further?stated that educated women seldom listen to anyone and cannot adhere to their spouses¡¯ expectations.
Her show Indian Matchmaking gained popularity for all the wrong reasons. Many deemed it as a 'cringe watch' as it preached too much regressiveness?that has somewhat evolved with changing times. Sima aunty, as she is fondly called, continues to harp on old approach?towards marriage and season after season, her advice to potential brides/grooms has been getting flak from the audiences.
Her interview hasn't sit well with many on the internet as they are calling her out for shaming educated/working women and stereotyping them.?
In other news, one of her clients Pradhuyman made headlines when her wife filed a domestic violence case against him.
In case, you want a quick revision, here's a recap of season 3:
Having spent 8 hours of my life binge-watching the latest season of Indian Matchmaking, I can safely say that Sima Taparia is an old tape stuck in a rusty recorder emanating the same dialogues - ¡®Compromise is must¡¯, ¡®If you get 60-70 percent, you should go ahead¡¯ and ¡®at the end it¡¯s all destiny¡¯ among others.
Let¡¯s dive right into the latest season that feels a more watered-down version in comparison to the previous two seasons.
1. We get to see some old faces including Viral Joshi from Season 2 who is now dating Aashay Shah and the two are going pretty strong. So much so that, Aashay takes her to India to make her meet his parents. Not surprisingly, the parents are pretty accepting of their son¡¯s choice and give a big thumbs up to their happily ever after.?
The duo is then shown shopping at a jewellery?store not for an engagement but just ¡®casual¡¯ gifts for the lady. They walk out of the store with a bracelet costing Rs 20-25 Lac and diamond earrings just because Aashay felt they looked good on Viral!??
Well, the bottom line is Viral has finally gotten her fairytale on her own but she feels her experience with Sima Taparia from Mumbai led her to her perfect match!
Sima Aunty calls her case a disadvantage as it¡¯ll be difficult to find a good match for her according to her long list of criteria.?
Priya giving a hard pass to a potential match due to lack of hair doesn¡¯t sit down too well with the celebrated matchmaker. The next boy doesn¡¯t make the cut due to height which offends Sima even more. However, she doesn¡¯t give up. After another failed attempt, the third guy manages to break the walls of Priya¡¯s heart and the two hit it off. Unfortunately, we don¡¯t get to witness their ¡®happily ever after¡¯ as their story ends abruptly.
3. Another old face from season 2 to make a comeback is - Rushali.?
She picks a match out of the two presented to her but it falls flat because the guy has different ideologies when it comes to family bonding. After another failed attempt, Sima Aunty nudges her in a relationship advisor¡¯s direction as Rushali seems to have issues when it comes to taking the plunge as she isn¡¯t ready to leave her parents. After a quick session, Rushali expresses how things seem much clearer now that she has openly voiced her concerns.?
?Just like the others, even Rushali¡¯s story is abruptly ended.
She brings with herself three alliances out of which only one makes the cut that too barely! Anjali Naskar and Vikash meetup for a painting date and it goes decently well. After a couple of more dates, Vikash announces that the chemistry is missing and then moves on to the next match. This one draws a similar conclusion only this time, Vikash is more upfront and tells the girl that he isn¡¯t feeling the vibe towards the end of the first date itself.?
Last but not least, Vikash then goes for a wine-tasting with Janki and this time he hits it off with her instantly. Lots of laughter, good vibes and wine later, the two decide to meet up again but that¡¯s the end of Vikash¡¯s story.?
5. The show then takes us to Miami, where Arti, a headstrong Sindhi girl, discusses her ideal husband with Sima Taparia. After rummaging through her files, Sima gets her two potential matches. Arti leans towards Avinash, who is not only Sindhi but also Aparna from Season one¡¯s cousin. The two meet and have a pleasant conversation but it somehow doesn¡¯t impress Arti who then goes on a zoom date with the second one and it ends with the same result as the first one - lack of chemistry.?
Sima then repeats the same lines for the hundredth time: ¡®you will not get everything¡¯, ¡®in one meeting you can¡¯t decide there¡¯s no chemistry¡¯, ¡®youngsters have no patience¡¯, ¡®arti is very adamant¡¯ etc.?
While speaking to the camera, she then says that Sima aunty needs to understand that this set up is not arranged or love but something in between.?
Arti then takes matters into her own hands and finds a man for herself on a dating app. She is the only one from the current season to find her happy ending and an elaborate marriage proposal, that too on her own terms and preferences.
6. Pavneet from New Delhi enrolls herself into Sima aunty¡¯s coveted programme. Standing tall at 6ft, she describes her criteria for a suitable husband. Now, Sima Taparia expresses how getting suitable matches for her would be a big problem considering her height. She sets Pavneet up with Tushar Tyagi, the same guy who previously went on a date with Rushali.?
This time around, the meeting goes well and the two seem to like each other. However, Tushar apparently ghosted her and went MIA for almost two weeks only to surface again to ask her out for a second date. Whether the two end up making it official or not hangs in the balance.
7. What stood out this season was that viewers got a peek into Sima aunty¡¯s personal life. We are introduced to her two daughters, son-in-law, granddaughter and her super supportive husband. Interestingly, even the family is as invested in getting people married as Sima aunty herself. We also get to meet Sima¡¯s sister Sandhya as the two catch up in the US and discuss the new generation¡¯s approach towards marriage.?
We see Sima getting emotional about the challenges they faced and how her husband was her pillar of strength along with their family friends/neighbours in Nasik as they helped her raise their daughter as the duo was away from their family.?
As seasons progress, there¡¯s a definitive shift in the clients and we get to see a large variety of potential brides and grooms with their larger lists of criterias. However, Sima aunty is still the same and imposes the same ideologies on her clients. There¡¯s only so much that one can hear her repetitive lines - ¡®It¡¯s all destiny¡¯, ¡®60-70% funda¡¯, ¡®compromise is necessary¡¯, ¡®girl is adamant¡¯ and ¡®boy is picky¡¯ among others.?
It¡¯s safe to say that one cannot even hate-watch the show anymore as there are no new elements in it, just new faces with zero percent success rate.
While the show definitely ended with a marriage proposal, it wasn¡¯t due to Sima Taparia¡¯s matchmaking. It remains to be seen if she is able to present one successful match on the show. Until then, most of the fans will end up feeling frustrated as the credits of the final episode roll down.?
Indian Matchmaking is available to stream on Netflix.
