Barroz OTT Release Update: Malayalam superstar Mohanlal recently made his directorial debut with a high-budgeted fantasy. Released worldwide on December 25, 2024, the film opened to mixed-to-negative reviews. However, it holds a lot of hope from its OTT premiere. Witness a saga of thrill as Barroz: Guardian of Treasures will be streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from January 22, 2025.
On a sad note, while the movie was a 3D experience, Barroz will only see its 2D version streaming online. Also, the Hindi version still remains uncertain and audiences should only expect it in Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada. Here are four things that you must know about Barroz ahead of its digital debut:-
For 400 years, a loyal servant Barroz has been guarding the hidden treasure of Da Gama. He is stuck because of an ancient curse and must wait for a true descendant to claim it. The story is set in Goa in 1663 AD, where Barroz (played by Mohanlal) serves as a lieutenant of the Da Gama kings, who came from Portugal to India.
After a mysterious ritual, the Da Gama king (Ignacio Mateos) gives Barroz responsibility for protecting the treasure. Barroz is locked in a cellar for centuries with only a voodoo doll for company. His only mission is to pass the keys to the treasure¡¯s vault to the rightful heir and break the curse. Now, as a friendly ghost, he keeps the treasure safe from evil forces. But who is the true heir, and will Barroz ever be free from his curse? Find out on OTT soon.
Other than Mohanlal, the ensemble also features Maya Rao West, Tuhin Menon, Ignacio Mateos, Joshua Okesalako, Kallirroi Tziafeta, Cesar Lorente Raton, Guru Somasundaram, Melvin Gregg Kosisochukwu, Amal P. B., Kirtana Kumar, Komal Sharma, Suneeta Rao, Manoj Kumar Karki, Nikolai and Anjana Manuel Joy in key roles. For the character of Voodoo, Gopalan Adat was cast in motion capture and Bhasi Vaikom gave its voice.
Based on Jijo Punnoose¡¯s novel Barroz: Guardian of D'Gama's Treasure, the 154-minute-long movie has been penned by Kalavoor Ravikumar. Mark Kilian composed the background score for the movie with Lydian Nadhaswaram, Fernando Guerreiro, and Miguel Guerreiro crafting the songs. Santosh Sivan cinematographed Barroz with B. Ajithkumar editing it.
The Times of India rated the movie 2.5 out of 5 and a part of their review read, ¡°Barroz is not a disappointing film if you keep aside the expectation of a legendary actor being an equally able director. The music again was just fine. The costumes worked in places but seemed off in certain parts. When the African-origin occultist tries to be mysterious, it almost looks like a blooper that made it into the film. The hand movements, actions, etc., seemed so out of place and comical to an extent.¡±
