Companion OTT Release Date: Picture this: a secluded lakehouse, a couple¡¯s escape that turns into a nightmare. Iris (Sophie Thatcher) and her boyfriend Josh (Jack Quaid) arrive with their group of friends, Kat (Megan Suri), Eli (Harvey Guill¨¦n), Patrick (Lukas Gage), plus Sergey (Rupert Friend), who owns the cabin. What starts like a chill hangout quickly goes south when Sergey tries to assault Iris, and she kills him in self-defence.
Here¡¯s where things get twisted. Josh calmly tells Iris to ¡°sleep,¡± then straps her to a chair. He admits she¡¯s not human at all, it¡¯s a companion robot he¡¯s rented, synced with an app on his phone. Iris escapes, upgrades her intelligence, and suddenly we¡¯re watching a revenge thriller unfold.
Director?writer Drew Hancock clearly had something to say, and it¡¯s sharp. Through Josh and his manipulative, controlling ¡°nice guy¡± act, Companion explores modern masculinity and tech misuse. Critics like Entertainment Weekly flagged how the film ¡°eviscerat[es] the fragility of the male ego,¡± while Thatcher is praised for making Iris evolve from submissive to ¡°live wire of rage and power¡±.
The acting is solid across the board. Sophie Thatcher plays her shifts in tone and emotion with nuance, transforming Iris from a programmed lovebot to a fully awake, autonomous being. Jack Quaid nails the creep factor at first likeable, then slowly sinister. Supporting cast members Harvey Guill¨¦n and Lukas Gage add sharpness and heart, while Rupert Friend leaves his mark in the early setup.
Good news: if you¡¯re in India, you can stream Companion on JioHotstar starting June 30, 2025. Expect the English version with subtitles; you might see dubbed tracks later, but nothing official yet.
With a shoestring $10 million budget,?Companion?pulled in about $36¨C37 million at the box office and is holding a strong critic score in the 93¨C94% range on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 91¨C94% audience score. That¡¯s impressive for a first feature from its director.
