Gyeongseong Creature, starring Park Seo-joon and Han So-hee, is an incredible tale with poignant and jaw-dropping surprises. The first season was a thrilling ride filled with intense emotions and rollercoaster-like turns. Before we discuss the cliffhanger that marked the end of the first season of the show, let's recap the plot.
Set in the spring of 1945, the series tells the tale of those who battle valiantly at the edge of life and death, at the darkest period of Gyeongseong (the former name for Seoul).?
The main characters, Jang Tae-sang (Park Seo-joon), the most powerful man in Gyeongseong, and expert investigator Yoon Chae-ok (Han So-hee), reluctantly team up to break into Onseong Hospital and save Myeong-ja (Ji Woo), the pregnant mistress of a Japanese police Commissioner called Ishikawa (Kim Do-hyun).
The? creature arising from the brutal trials in the hospital was actually Chae-ok's mother Choi Seong-sim? (Kang Mal-geum), who was missing for the past 10 years. The military is torturing and killing Joseon residents by infesting them with a parasitic worm species known as the Najin. Seong-sim (the creature) recognizes her daughter when they first meet and does her hardest to keep her safe. As an alternative, Chae-ok brings the hospital's inmates to safety. As a diversion, Jang Tae-sang stays behind and sustains injuries that could be fatal but ends up saving himself.
Chae-ok then kills Onseong Director Ichiro (Hyun Bong-sik). The wife of Commissioner Ishikawa, Lady Maeda (Soo Hyun), takes advantage of the ruckus surrounding Chae-ok's detention to abduct her.??
Yes, Maeda actually supports the hospital's brutal research. In order to get to Tae-Sang, she kidnaps Chae-ok but Tae-sang was in no mood to listen to her and he instantly went on a mission to find Chae-ok.
After searching for his wife for 10 years, Chase-ok¡¯s dad Yoon Jung-won (Jo Han-chul) decides he wants to be with his wife even if it meant to stay with her while she was turned into a creature. He reached the hospital and set up a bomb to kill both himself and the Najin (his wife), but she survived and he died in the blast.
After seeing that Akiko Aka Meyong-ja has also started to develop into a creature, the Japanese Military officials lock her up in a cage and she ends up giving birth to her child confined in a dainty room.
When they return to Gyeongseong, Chae-ok advises that she and Tae-sang split up, but Tae-sang is adamant about staying put, and ultimately Lady Maeda finds them. Supported by an extensive group of killers, she icily grants their demise. As the two were trying everything to live, Chae-ok's mother-turned-creature, Seong-sim, steps in to save the day and takes out the assassins. Her maternal love then emerges, and even though she was in no mood to spare Tae-sang, she did not attack Tae-sang at Chae-ok's request as she wanted to protect Chae-ok.? But at what cost? While she was trying to attack Tae-sang, Chae-ok came in between and the creature¡¯s tentacles pierced through Chae-ok¡¯s stomach making her bleed.?
Before the credits roll, we see Tae-sang bawling over Chae-ok¡¯s death and is unable to bring his life back to normal.
In the last scene, we witness Chae-ok's lifeless body drop into the ocean. Seong-sim follows fast, holding her daughter, whom she had unintentionally killed.? Seong-sim's Najin, the worm that turned her into a creature enters Chae-ok's mouth. Seong-sim disappears into the shadows, suggesting that she may have had the ability to control her powers and give her daughter a rebirth.?
The title theme then starts to play as Chae-ok opens her eyes! Thus, no, Tae-sang and Chae-ok do not die, and you will still see them in the upcoming season.
As seen in the end of the show and also in an announcement made by makers, Tae-sang is now called Ho-jae. Has he changed his identity? Or is Ho-jae an entirely different person? Questions shall be answered in season 2 coming this year, 2024. But it is quite possible that following drastic events, Tae-sang has changed is identity and has probably even given up on his pawn shop.
