Chris Columbus was the director of the first installment in the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone film adaptations, which follows the title character as he realises he has magical abilities. The second movie starts near the conclusion of Harry's summer vacation, the summer vacation itself isn't discussed in great length because the school year is the main subject. It introduces Ginny Weasley, who makes a brief appearance in the first movie but enrolls in school in the second, as well as Dobby the House Elf and his attempts to stop Harry from going back to Hogwarts. With flashback scenes depicting Hagrid's expulsion and Voldemort as a student, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets also alternates between the past and the present as Harry and his companions learn about Tom Riddle and his time at the school.

The huge discovery at the conclusion, when Mad-Eye Moody is shown to be Barty Crouch in disguise, is contextualised once more through flashbacks from an earlier time.?

The fifth year of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix continues. Harry casts a Patronus spell at the beginning of the summer movie, and as a result, he is expelled from Hogwarts. However, it sets the stage for a change in attitude towards Harry and Dumbledore and for the introduction of the Ministry of Magic as a site. Of course, the expulsion is revoked. Harry begins to discover their link as he and Voldemort fight it out until the school year is through.

While not the series' last film, this one centres on a year at Hogwarts and features numerous flashbacks as Dumbledore eventually shares with Harry the most of the information he has concerning Voldemort and the Horcruxes. The flashbacks are also conveyed as memories, as Harry and Dumbledore review many of the interactions Voldemort and Dumbledore had over the years using the Pensieve, as well as Professor Slughorn's crucial memory of a meeting with Tom Riddle.

As Harry, Ron, and Hermione leave Hogwarts and get ready for their decisive encounter with Voldemort, the events of the final two films take place throughout the same time period as those of the previous films. The golden three makes their way back to Hogwarts for one final battle against Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The Gringotts heist and the Battle of Hogwarts take place back-to-back in close succession in May 1998, and the film begins in March 1998, immediately after the sad conclusion of the previous film. As a new generation enters Hogwarts on September 1, 2017, the epilogue fast-forwards 30 years.
