"It's A Shame": Mother Of Jeffrey Dahmer's Victim Slams Evan Peters' Golden Globes Win

On Tuesday night, the mother of one of the victims of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer condemned Evan Peters' Golden Globes win for his depiction of Dahmer in the hit Netflix drama series centered on his life.

Shirley Hughes, who lost her son Tony Hughes to Dahmer, said that Peters' winning speech should have talked about all of Dahmer's victims.

She told TMZ she wished Peters had used the opportunity to make a gesture to the Dahmer victims' families or to urge the film industry that it is time to stop telling the stories of killers.?

Peters' performance as Dahmer in the Netflix miniseries "Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story earned him a Golden Globe on Tuesday night for Best Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series.

Evan Peters expressed his desire for good things to come from his win and the show itself in his acceptance speech.

Hughes, though, was not optimistic, stating that Peters' award for the show would have no positive effects.?

Instead, it makes the families of the people who died have to go through the trauma all over again.

The mother of the victim echoed her thoughts, stating

"There's a lot of sick people around the world, and people winning acting roles from playing killers keeps the obsession going, making sick people thrive on the fame."

Despite Peters' claim during his speech that he struggled to play the killer, Shirley still challenged his choice to accept the role.

Her argument is that he, or any actor, would have been better off passing on the part out of consideration for the victim's loved ones who must bear the pain of losing someone to the killer each day.

"It's a shame that people can take our tragedy and make money,' she said.?"The victims never saw a cent. We go through these emotions every day."

However, internet is divided over criticism over Peters' winning speech:?

The producers of the show have faced criticism from Dahmer's victims' families before.

In October, Ryan Murphy, the show's creator, claimed he tried to contact 20 friends and family members of the victims before filming started, but "not a single person responded."

Rita Isbell, the sister of Dahmer's 19-year-old victim Errol Lindsey, said that no one had gotten in touch with her before the show came out.?

She called Netflix "greedy" for not giving any of the money to Lindsey's children.

"Over the course of the three-and-a-half years when we were writing it, working on it, we reached out to around 20 of the victims' families and friends trying to get input, trying to talk to people, and not a single person responded to us in that process." said Murphy.

"So we relied very, very heavily on our incredible group of researchers who… I don't even know how they found a lot of this stuff.?But it was just like a night and day effort to us trying to uncover the truth of these people" he said.

Shirley Hughes, who is now 85 years old, was quick to criticize the show when it came out in September on a popular streaming site.

"I don't see how they can do that. I don't see how they can use our names and put stuff out there like that"she told the Guardian at the time.

Tony Hughes, a deaf 31-year-old whom Dahmer murdered in 1991, was the subject of one of the show's 10 episodes.

In what most people think is one of the hardest episodes of the series, Dahmer's short relationship with Hughes is shown. Hughes was an aspiring model who liked to dance at local clubs with his deaf and gay friends.

The most important thing that happens in Episode 6 is when Dahmer kills Hughes, cooks and eats his liver, and then gives the money to his family's search effort.

After her son's skull was found in Dahmer's apartment, Shirley Hughes discovered that her son had already been murdered.
