Screenwriter Niren Bhatt had confirmed in an interview with Mid-Day that Munjya is based on Maharashtrian folklore.
The upanayana ceremony, which is customarily performed when a boy is seven years old, involves tying a sacred thread around the boy's torso and waist in many Hindu families. The boy is called "Munjya" after he puts on the thread.
It is believed that Munjya ghost represent the spirits of boys who passed away prior to marriage and following the upanayana ceremony. They are normally harmless, live in peepal trees, and travel around at night. In other stories, they have even been reported to occasionally cause accidents and to pelt violators with stones.
¡°If a man passes away without getting married after his munja ceremony but before his Sod Munja, he transforms into a Munjya ¡ª a spirit dwelling in peepal trees or close to wells,¡± said Niren Bhatt in the same interview with the media outlet.?
