OTT Gaint is considered to be the originator of the binge-watch trend in entertainment. The streaming service changed the way people watch web series when it began releasing complete seasons at once and allowing users to watch episodes back-to-back. Many other OTTs have since switched to the conventional weekly episode format, and Netflix may soon forsake the binge-watch model in favour of the old one.
According to analyst Michael Nathanson, who was quoted in the Puck Newsweekly, Netflix will make the model ¡®go away.¡¯
As per the source, Netflix's internal inquiry found "no empirical proof that week-to-week episodes lower member attrition." The story also alleges that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has changed his mind about the concept after previously opposing it.
While there has been no official confirmation on the release model. Netflix's binge-watch approach has no issue attaining the former; it's the latter that may be causing the streaming giant some stress.
More and more, it's apparent that services like Disney+ Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video are maintaining control of the mainstream culture by releasing new episodes on a weekly basis.?
Examples of these programmes include Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, both of which have enjoyed great success and receive much more weekly social media attention than any Netflix binge-watch release.
Naturally, there have been expectations for the binge-watch model as well, such as for the Korean dramas Money Heist, Squid Game and Stranger Things which are known to break viewership records.
So, do you believe Netflix should switch to a weekly episode model, or do you enjoy binge-watching?
