Sunny Deol dented the box office recently with the sequel of his hit film Gadar.?
22 years have passed but the connection that this film formed with the audience proved to be unbroken when the sequel achieved unprecedented success. While the film has its fair share of flaws, the spirit remains intact.?
Gadar 2 changed the box office game for Bollywood after a long lull.
Now that the movie has made its OTT premier, it has finally reached those who had been awaiting its digital release, including yours truly.?
After having watched the film with no preconceived notions, it¡¯s safe to say that it¡¯s not a perfect film but it has many moments that are goosebumps inducing. Let¡¯s check it out!
It was the best approach to give a recap of the phenomena that was Gadar Ek Prem Katha. The cherry on top was Nana Patekar¡¯s voiceover narrating the tale that we all grew up watching. The way they included late Amrish Puri in the plotline was also heartwarming as Gadar can never be complete without Ashraf Ali, right?
Right after the recap, we are introduced to our villain Hamid Iqbal, the army General of Pakistan who has a bone to pick with Tara Singh. He is filled with vengeance as Tara killed forty of his soldiers during his escape from Pakistan with Sakeena and their son Jeete. It¡¯s not an intro for the faint hearted. There¡¯s blood and gore right from the beginning. In a flashback scene, he gives an option to a Hindu to pick between Bhagvad Gita and Quran Sharif. Once the latter takes his pick, he is slain brutally.
Decades might have passed but this song has an ever-expanding fan base. Tara and Sakeena¡¯s romance on this soulful track is iconic and the sequel has done full justice to it once again. The icing on the cake is the flashbacks from the original film.
Right in the starting of the film, Tara is given the big responsibility of delivering ammunition to the soldiers who are in the middle of firing with Pakistani soldiers at Ram Teekri. The way he drives the truck amid bombing and raining of bullets will have you on the edge of your seat.
Right after Sakeena and Jeete come to terms with the fact that Tara has been kidnapped by Pak soldiers, Jeete takes it upon himself to go there and get his ¡®paape¡¯ back! The errant and spoilt boy suddenly becomes responsible and tries to infiltrate the enemy country illegally. While in the bus, he is visibly nervous up until the point where he is next in line. Just when you think that he¡¯ll get caught for faking his identity, he owns it with powerful dialogues and a very confident demeanor proving that he is indeed the brave son of Tara Singh.
The moment when Jeete, pretending to be a cook, realises that his father Tara isn¡¯t in captivity after all and he had been misled. He gets restless to an extent where he visits jail to enquire about Tara¡¯s whereabouts from his captured friends. That is when he gets caught!
I¡¯m pretty sure Tara¡¯s entry in Pakistan must have been met with endless whistles and cat-calling in the theatres. Even when you watch the film on OTT, the moment is exhilarating. In a following sequence, an angry mob man sticks a 'Crush India¡¯ sticker and gets cast away like a fly by Tara. That¡¯s when you know that all hell will break loose.
Jeete is brought to a public gathering by General Iqbal so that he is given a death punishment by the maulana for faking his identity and allegedly raping a Pakistani girl Muskaan. When the General asks for Jeete¡¯s final wish before he is given a capital punishment, Tara¡¯s roar is heard with the dialogue ¡®Beta Baap Se Milna Chahega?¡¯. If this moment isn¡¯t clap-worthy?then I don't know what is!?
During the high-octane fight, the General threatens Tara that he¡¯ll kill Jeete if he doesn¡¯t come forward. Just then from the cloud of dirt, emerges Tara with Hamid Iqbal¡¯s little son in his hands. An eye for an eye - a son for a son!
Tara and Jeete¡¯s hiding place gets discovered which results in them fleeing to save their lives. During this chase this father-son duo gets into beast mode and fights back. In fact, we see Tara becoming a desi Thor with a hammer and smashing people who try to come in their way!
This one has my heart! When Tara and Jeete get separated, Tara is chased by a mob of angry men with swords in their hands. While running Tara abruptly stops which results in the mob taking a halt at a distance. The camera then pans to a hand pump and the fear on the faces of the men is evident. Tara runs to ukhaadofy the pump but before he could, the mob runs away for dear life as we all know what happens when Sunny Deol has a hand pump, right?
This time around, the dialogue and the emotions were the same but the speaker was changed. Instead of Tara screaming these words, his son Jeete does it when Hamid Iqbal forces Tara to speak the Murdabad slogan. The scene is then elaborated further when the General is about to slice Jeete¡¯s neck and Tara roars that he will say what the General wants him to say but it will have no effect as it will fall on deaf ears.?
That look definitely called for whistles! The thrilling tanks sequence ends with the General unknowingly crossing the border and entering India. When Colonel Devendra Rawat (Gaurav Chopra) appears with his army of men, the fear on the General¡¯s face is priceless. However, he soon recovers and still tries to throw his weight around.?
This was probably one of the most powerful scenes of the film. When Tara asks Hamid Iqbal to choose between the two holy books as his choice will decide his fate, the bad man chooses Gita as he thinks that by doing so, Tara will forgive him and not take his life. However, Tara loses it and calls out the General. He says that instead of picking one he could have hugged the two kids.
