Superstar OTT Release Date: What happens when pop culture, tabloid frenzy, and glittery chaos collide in the weirdest, wildest corner of Spanish history? You get Superstar, a bold new Spanish-language series arriving on Netflix this July 18. Created by the mind-bending filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo and backed by creative powerhouses Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (the duo behind Veneno and Paquita Salas), this limited series is a technicolour fever dream about fame, identity, and a pop diva who refused to be ordinary.
Set in the early 2000s, Superstar dramatises the real-life rise of Tamara, later known as Yurena, a singer who went from public ridicule to full-blown icon status with her breakout song ¡°No cambi¨¦¡± and her cult-favorite album Superstar. Her larger-than-life presence, flashy outfits, and unfiltered persona made her a tabloid sensation and a TV fixture. But behind the glitter was a woman constantly being redefined by a public obsessed with laughing at her, until she took the narrative back.
Leading the cast is Ingrid Garc¨ªa-Jonsson, playing the fictionalised Tamara/Yurena, and Secun de la Rosa, whose exact role is under wraps. Alongside Vigalondo (best known for Time Crimes and Anne Hathaway¡¯s Colossal) is Claudia Costafreda, co-director and known for Cardo. The writing team also includes Mar¨ªa Bastar¨®s and Paco Bezerra.
As for the producers, Calvo and Ambrossi, they¡¯ve made it clear that Superstar is close to their hearts. In their words, the show ¡°pays tribute to an era when the most unexpected protagonists monopolised television¡± and when Spain's cultural identity was being remixed in real time. They say they¡¯ve found the perfect tone, thanks to Vigalondo¡¯s wild vision and a team that wasn¡¯t afraid to ¡°humanise people who were once treated as jokes.¡±
So mark your calendars. Superstar lands July 18 on Netflix, and if the trailer and the creative pedigree are anything to go by, it¡¯s going to be unlike anything you've seen before in Spanish or otherwise.
