Princess Diana lost her life in an automobile accident in the early hours of Sunday, August 31, 1997, in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris, France. Dodi Al Fayed, her then boyfriend, Trevor Rees-Jones, her bodyguard, and the car driver Henri Paul were all in the vehicle with her.?
There was only one survivor, Rees-Jones.
A yacht crew member told WWD that the couple had spent over a week together sailing across the Mediterranean when they arrived in Paris on August 30, 1997, from Sardinia. According to NBC, they had dinner together that Saturday night at Fayed's father's opulent hotel, the Ritz Paris, before departing early on Sunday morning for Fayed's Paris residence.
At that point, the couple reportedly left in a Mercedes-Benz driven by Henri Paul, the Ritz's deputy head of security, according to the BBC. Trevor Rees-Jones, a bodyguard, was with them.
Paul lost control of the car shortly after it reached the Pont de L'Alma tunnel, which was less than two miles from the starting point of their trip. Witnesses noticed the car speeding, according to the AP.
Paul struck the thirteenth pillar of the tunnel while attempting to avoid colliding with a white Fiat Uno in the right-hand lane. Paul and Fayed were instantaneously murdered in a catastrophic crash, as reported by NBC.
Rees-Jones and Diana both momentarily survived the impact. According to Hans Christian Andersen's account in "The Day Diana Died," the journey from the Ritz to the tunnel took three minutes.
The French police were unable to find the white Fiat that was involved in the incident, according to an NBC report from 2008. The Guardian revealed in the same year that jurors in a six-month inquiry into Diana and Fayed's deaths concluded that Diana's death was caused by her chauffeur and paparazzi who were coming towards the vehicle to take photos.
Firefighters got a call for assistance at 12:27 a.m., and at 12:40 a.m., police and firefighters showed up. Princess Diana's final words, according to firefighter Sergeant Xavier Gourmelon who was on the site, were "My God, what's happened?"
Princess Diana suffered cardiac arrest while being pulled from the automobile wreckage. After performing CPR, first responders transported her to a hospital. The Princess and Rees-Jones arrived at the hospital at around two in the morning. In a fruitless attempt to save Diana's life, surgeons opened her hurt chest, sealed a wound in her heart, and massaged the organ for two hours.
Her death was announced a few hours later and it sure came as a shock to all.
