Shonda Rhimes is a prominent name in Western television, known for hits like Grey's Anatomy and the recent success Bridgerton. With three seasons of regency-era drama captivating audiences, and a spin-off series, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, adding to the global buzz, her influence is undeniable.
Back home, our entertainment industry is preparing its own version of a desi Bridgerton, but with a unique twist. The upcoming show, titled The Royals, infuses a startup and tech element into its regal narrative.
The creator Pritish Nandy is no less than Rhimes. Having created and produced several films and shows including Four More Shots Please! And Modern Love Mumbai to name a few, he is all set to take the viewers on a journey with The Royals!
When an entitled Prince Charming meets a startup whiz, they will inevitably bump heads! Will their ambitions collide, two worlds clash, or even spark a surprising romance? From palace gates to boardroom debates, The Royals is a modern-day Indian royalty rom-com series anchored by the undeniable chemistry between Bhumi Pednekar, making her series debut, and Ishaan Khatter.
Joining Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter is the legendary Zeenat Aman, making a special appearance and marking her Netflix debut. The ensemble cast also features Sakshi Tanwar, Nora Fatehi, Dino Morea, Milind Soman, Chunky Panday, Vihaan Samat, Kavya Trehan, Sumukhi Suresh, Udit Arora, Lisa Mishra, and Luke Kenny, promising a rich tapestry of talent and charisma.
Here's the teaser:?The show is produced by Pritish Nandy and created by Rangita and Ishita Pritish Nandy. Regarding The Royals, they jointly issued a statement that read, ¡°The Royals being our very first with Netflix had to be just the right blend of coming-of-age-India, Gen Z storytelling and feisty fun! There is the inevitable romance of old royalty; monarchs without crowns, and the incredible drive of today¡¯s startup warriors for whom crowns hold zero shine. Sparks and insults will fly when these 2 worlds clash, and that has been great fun for us to create and produce! Netflix¡¯s commitment to championing exceptional and innovative content has always resonated with us. We¡¯re thrilled to be a part of the Netflix family and partner with them to take our tell on a girl-meets-boy, the classic maharaja (king) and aamkumari (commoner) tale, to a global audience.¡±
Doesn¡¯t the over one-minute clip evoke memories of Bridgerton? Here¡¯s who I can personally envision playing the desi versions of the iconic Bridgerton characters:
Ishaan can easily play the part of the suave hero who is out to impress the heroine with his charm and wit. He is the most eligible bachelor who only has eyes for his lady.?
The ever wise and intelligent Lady Danbury could be mirrored by Tanwar. Danbury is the chief advisor of the queen and knows everything that goes down in her kingdom. Not even a leaf can fall without her permission. Wouldn't Sakshi ace such a role impeccably?
The elder most Bridgerton sibling Daphne is a smart and kind. Her compassion and feistiness is not something that everyone can handle. By the looks of it, Bhumi's character seems to be fun-loving and easy going, something very similar.?
Last but not least, Zeenat Aman is set to make her grand OTT debut, embodying the regal essence of a queen much like Charlotte. She will command her subjects with grace, authority, and an undeniable charm that promises to captivate audiences.
