The Summer Hikaru Died OTT Release Date: Some stories quietly walk into your life and leave a lasting mark. This is one of those rare ones. Based on Mokumokuren*s hauntingly beautiful manga, this deeply emotional and slightly chilling tale will finally come to life as an anime series. And the wait isn*t long. The Summer Hikaru Died premieres globally on July 5, 2025, on Netflix.
Set in a peaceful rural town in Japan, the story follows Yoshiki, a teenage boy trying to hold on to something that might already be gone. His best friend, Hikaru, returns from a mountain trip... but something's not right. He looks like Hikaru, sounds like Hikaru, but deep inside, Yoshiki knows: this is not the same person he once knew. What follows is an emotional journey more than a horror story, one that quietly explores love, loss, identity, and how we deal with change that scares us.
Directed by Ry身hei Takeshita (of Jujutsu Kaisen fame), the anime promises to stay true to the manga*s quiet emotional depth. With character designs by Y迂ichi Takahashi and hauntingly beautiful artwork by Kohei Honda, the series will visually reflect the calm and creepiness of a small town where something just isn*t right. CygamesPictures has done animation production for The Summer Hikaru Died.
Chiaki Kobayashi, who*s playing Yoshiki in this one, shared in a media statement, "I'm thrilled to voice Yoshiki. From the audition, I felt a whirlwind of emotions 〞 fear, comfort, and uncertainty. My goal was to capture all of Yoshiki*s feelings and melancholy." Shuichiro Umeda, voicing Hikaru, added, "Playing Hikaru was like peering into darkness. Despite uncertainties, my desire to stay connected with Yoshiki was clear, and I approached the role with that strong feeling."
So this July, if you're looking for something emotional, different, and unforgettable, don*t miss The Summer Hikaru Died.
