A plane carrying forty-five people took off from Montevideo, Uruguay, in October 1972 with the intention of reaching Chile. The plane disappeared without a trace. The aircraft tragically crashed into the ruthless Andes mountains, never to be seen again.
This story is now being shown in a movie called Society Of The Snow. The film, which is helmed by Spanish director J.A. Bayona, is inspired by Pablo Vierci's gripping 2008 novel La Sociedad de la Nieve. The gripping story delves into the limits of human perseverance by eloquently describing how the teenage rugby players who became stuck had to stoop to horrific means of subsistence in order to survive.
The Old Christians Club rugby union team, a group of young men in their late teens and early twenties, was among the 45 passengers on board Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 when it crashed in the dangerous Andes Mountains on October 13, 1972.
The co-pilot Dante Lagurara flew the four-year-old aircraft, called the "lead sled," as it made its way through difficult weather conditions over the Andes. His error in judgment during the descent caused the plane to tragically collide with the mountains, shattering apart and trapping the survivors for two months in the Andean winter.
As per Augustman.com, one of the survivors, Daniel Fern¨¢ndez, remembers the horrific crash. The plane's white fuselage blended in with the snow-covered surroundings, making it difficult for the group to indicate their location in the snow by creating an X with their clothes and belongings.
When the gang realized they would likely go hungry, they reluctantly started eating the corpses of the ones who died.?
What added to their misery was an avalanche, shortage of food and of course the extreme weather and no help in sight.
The 72-day quest came to an end on December 22, 1972, when a chopper arrived to rescue them. Only sixteen of the forty-five who went out made it.
Society Of The Snow is set to release on Netflix on 4th January 2024.
