The Supreme Court of India has begun the much-awaited hearing of legalising same-sex marriage in India. With a bunch of multiple petitions in place, the session began on 18th April and shall conclude on 20th April. This historic hearing is gaining support from worldwide including some of Bollywood¡¯s biggies.
The Kashmir Files director took to Twitter and slammed the Centre terming same-sex marriage as an 'urban elitist' concept. He said, ¡°NO. Same-sex marriage is not an ¡®urban elitist¡¯ concept. It¡¯s a human need. Maybe some sarkari elites drafted who have never travelled in small towns & villages. Or Mumbai locals.¡±
¡°First, same-sex marriage is not a concept. It¡¯s a need. It¡¯s a right. And in a progressive, liberal & inclusive civilisation like Bharat, same-sex marriage should be normal, not a crime.¡± Hansal Mehta sharing a still from his series Modern Day Mumbai wrote, ¡°Come on Supreme Court! Pave the path. Legalise same-sex marriages. #AbKiBaarPyaar¡±
Actress Celina Jaitely shared a heartwarming video in support and wrote, ¡°I stand with the Indian #LGBTQ in their battle for the right to life to dignity, to the institution of marriage & family which is available to others Today a 5 judge Constitution Bench hears pleas seeking legal recognition for same-sex marriage.¡±
Comedian Vir Das and actress Sumona Chakraborty also backed the ongoing hearing. Where Vir wrote, ¡°Hoping our honourable SC legalises #samesexmarriage today¡±, Sumona who is currently appearing on The Kapil Sharma Show tweeted, ¡°Hoping our honourable SC legalises #samesexmarriage today.¡±
¡°Good morning beautiful people. Today at 1 pm the Supreme Court of India starts its deliberation on same-sex marriage. An important day in our lives &struggle for equal rights. Be with us to create a more beautiful inclusive world?#EqualityIsNonNegotiable.¡±
Apurva Asrani who himself belongs to the queer community voiced his thoughts too. He tweeted, ¡°Dear Left, Right & those in between; It's easy to be divided by ideological hatred. The bigger question is; can you be united today for the right to love? #samesexmarriage isn't just some trending hashtag. Not fighting for your brethren to have it is unconstitutional & inhuman.¡±
If the hearing ends in favour of lgbtq+ community then India will be the 35 countries across the world to have legalised same-sex marriage. The five-bench judges hearing the case are Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Justice Ravindra Bhat, Justice Hima Kohli, and Justice PS Narasimha.
