While most of us remember him from 3 Idiots, Ali had made his acting debut long before. He first played a small role in?romantic comedy The Other End of the Line (2008), which eventually flopped. He then appeared in the American TV miniseries Bollywood Hero (2009), wherein he played the role of Monty Kapoor. During his college years, director Saeed Akhtar Mirza cast him as the lead in the erotic thriller Ek Tho Chance (2009), a film about life in Mumbai that premiered at the 14th International Film Festival of Kerala. And it is only after that, he made his Bollywood debut with Rajkumar Hirani movie.?
His claim to fame however was?Fukrey, a comedy film that is still popular among the youth. He went on to do many other films including?Khamoshiyan and?Bobby Jasoos among others but he didn't get his due until the web series Mirzapur, which made him a household name and a fan-favourite character.
He then left the entire industry in shock by bagging a small role in?Furious 7 starring?Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. He revealed that he bagged the offer after a friend who worked in Warner Bros visited India and he tried his luck giving an audition.?
He made waves again when he starred in?Victoria & Abdul alongside?Judi Dench in a pivotal role and not a blink-and-miss appearance. In 2022, he featured in?Death on the Nile,?with reputed Hollywood actors like Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Kenneth Branagh, Russell Brand, Dawn French, Gal Gadot and Armie Hammer among others. In?Kandahar, a 2023 American spy action thriller film directed by Ric Roman Waugh, he shared screenspace with?Gerard Butler. Now, he is all set to make history by becoming the first Indian actor to join an international action film franchise as?Kandahar is in the works reportedly.?
People blame a bad PR for his lack of recognition. "He doesn¡¯t self-promote himself through PR a lot. He said this while promoting Victoria and Abdul I think that he has deliberately told his PR not to promote this movie in India for reasons best known to him. I believe he is a great actor and has potential. He did an excellent job as Guddu and also Death on the Nile even though was not that great he did justice to his role and that accent. Watched it just for him and he didn't disappoint," said one of the Reddit users. "Whatever he is doing to push his career isn¡¯t great, he¡¯s clearly good enough to get Hollywood movies and made a great impression with Judi Dench who he acted with," said another one.
