Lin Laishram Lauds Priyanka Chopra For Accepting That Someone From North-East Should Have Played Mary Kom
"I look nothing like her."
About eight years after the release of Mary Kom and so many controversies, Priyanka Chopra in a recent interview finally admitted that someone from North-East should have played the titular role and that she looked nothing like her.?
"In hindsight," Priyanka said, "The part should have probably gone to someone from the Northeast. But I was just greedy as an actor to get a chance to tell her story, because as a woman, she inspired me so much."
Now, actress Lin Laishram who had earlier as well questioned her casting has reacted to PC's comment.?
"I have always admired Priyanka, and my respect for her has grown multiple folds now. I think it is really brave of her to not only accept this but also put it out there. Inclusivity, I feel, is very hard to understand unless you are excluded. Earlier, the focus and pressure were always around the box office, and that created a big class divide amongst actors and ethnicity. Now with the OTT gaining prominence, there seems to be a lot more emphasis being laid on merit and authenticity," she told freepressjournal.in.
For the unversed, Lin Laishram also auditioned for Omung Kumar's Mary Kom, but eventually, the role went to Priyanka Chopra, and Laishram ended up playing Mary Kom's friend.
She had earlier said, "As an actor, that self-centered, egoistic actor tells me that I should have been... But it could have been anybody from the North East. We have many great actors. I want to be generous here and say that many, many actors could have done this. But the casting and the whole team decided on someone else. It's heartbreaking, but we are coming along, and I hope that this does not happen again."
