Mahesh Bhatt who gave Sushmita Sen her debut movie in Bollywood has extended support to the actress amid trolls calling her a gold digger. The ace filmmaker that it's not fair to criticise her over her relationship with Lalit Modi. Praising her, he said that Sen has lived her life on her own terms and she always follows her heart.?

In an interview with ETimes, the director who launched her in Dastak, said, "I always remember her fondly. She was an unusual girl. What I salute her for is that she has lived her life on her own terms. She has the guts to live on her own dictates...?I think she has always been a person who has followed her heart and lived her life on her own terms".
Furthermore, Bhatt revealed how he was impressed with Sushmita in his first meeting with her. Sen had expressed her wish to work with him in one of her interviews after winning the title of Miss Universe. When someone told Mahesh Bhatt the same, he looked at her photos and arranged for a meeting. Her warm personality, which he says was unusual for an industry like Bollywood, impressed him and thus, he launched her in Dastak, a film written by his brother Vikram Bhatt.?
It is during the filming of this movie that Sushmita Sen and Vikram Bhatt fell in love with each other. Vikram was married at that time and their relationship had become nothing less than a scandal. However, their relationship didn't last long and they soon parted ways.
