The?recipient of three National Film Awards and Padma Bhushan, legendary actor?Mithun Chakraborty will soon be coveted with the third-highest civilian award - the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The news was shared by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on September 30. "Mithun Da's remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema," he announced.?
On getting the highest award in the field of cinema, Mithun Da as he is fondly called, is elated. "I don't have words. Neither I can laugh nor cry. This is such a big thing... I dedicate this to my family and my fans across the world," he was quoted as saying.?
Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest award in the field of cinema, is bestowed upon those who have made "outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema". It is awarded annually during the National Film Award Ceremony, which is organised by the?Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Who gets the award? This is selected by a committee consisting of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry.?
As part of the honour, people are awarded a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of Rs 10,00,000. The award was first introduced in?1969. The first winner was a female actress named?Devika Rani,?who is also hailed as the "the first lady of Indian cinema".
The 70th National Film Awards will be held on October 8. Mithun Chakraborty will be presented with the award then for his contribution to Indian cinema.
