‘You Cannot Argue With Faith’: Naseeruddin Shah Says Certain Media Triggers Religion-Based Hate

Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah is one of the most vocal celebrities in Indian cinema. Out of several other subjects, Shah has often spoken about the religion-based hatred that has taken the country in a clutch. In a recent interview, while promoting his series Taj – Divided by Blood, Shah reflected on the same yet again.

Shah believes that a certain section of the media is responsible for triggering hate in this country.

He told Quint, “Those who believe in religion far outnumber those who don’t. You cannot argue with faith. I know people who are friends of mine who claim that all people in my community are not worthy of living here. These people are still my friends because I know that they are saying it out of the political experience, they want to be on the winning side.”

“I don’t take it personally, though I have not taken myself to be of any particular community. I do not subscribe to the idea of religion. I have faith in innate human goodness.”

Naseerudding further revealed that Taj – Divided by Blood will probably be his last lengthy stint. “I have cut down on the number of projects I do. Akbar is probably the last lengthy part that I will play because I am feeling a bit spent, a bit exhausted,” shared Shah who was last seen in Arjun Kapoor’s Kuttey.

Naseerudding believed that the bigger challenge in showbiz today is to choose a project that skips offending sensibilities because “everything has a jingoistic colour”. Naseer said, “If you’re talking about bricks, soap, toothpaste, it all has to be related to patriotism. I do not need to wear my patriotism on my sleeve. If anybody doubts my love for the country, they can continue doing that. I won’t bother to convince them the contrary.”

Naseer in another interview was asked to reflect on the fact that India seems to believe that everything that dates back to the Mughals is wrong.

Reacting to it Shah told Indian Express, “It amuses me because it is so utterly ridiculous. I mean, people can’t tell the difference between Akbar and a murderous invader like Nader Shah or Babar’s great-grandfather Taimur. These were people who came here to loot, the Mughals didn’t come here to loot. They came here to make this their home and that’s what they did. Who can deny their contribution?”
