Did you know Queen's Gambit actress Anya Taylor-Joy refused to speak English for two years because of the trauma she faced when her family moved to London from Argentina?
Today, she bagged the prestigious Golden Globe 2021 award for best actress in a limited series for her role in the Netflix show.?
"The move [to London] was very traumatic to me. All of a sudden I was in this intense big city." She added that she refused to learn English hoping that her parents would take her back and destiny had different plans for her.?
Anya played the role of Beth Harmon in Queen's Gambit and she said that she connected with the character instantly. "Reading it, I was like, this hurt - but it hurts because I recognise it. We're taught as human beings to not really say the way we're feeling and when you find somebody that feels the same way you do, you [think], I'm not alone in this."?
She had told this earlier to Wall Street Journal.
While accepting the award, she said, "It's wonderful that everyone's seen the show but I would do this project again and again and again, I learnt so much, I'm so grateful. Thank you to the audiences that have watched it."
Another major win was Sacha Baron Cohen bagging best comedy actor for?Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.
He was competition against James Corden (The Prom), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), Dev Patel (The Personal History of David Copperfield) and Andy Samberg (Palm Springs).
In his victory speech, he thanked his team, especially for 'risking their lives' and said, "Most thanks of all to my bodyguard who stopped me getting shot twice. You know who you are and you know I'm not allowed to say your name but thank you."
