Making India proud, Tamil film Koozhangal AKA Pebbles has won the prestigious Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2021. The film, directed by debutant director Vinothraj PS, has made history.?
The first Indian film to have won the honour was?Malayalam filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan's?S Durga in 2017.
The jury called Pebbles "a lesson in pure cinema captivating us with its beauty and humour, in spite of its grim subject."
?"Although the story deals with grueling poverty in the searing drought-ridden landscapes of southern India, it succeeded nonetheless in captivating the jury with its beauty and humour," the statement read.
Set in Arittapatti, a drought hit village of Tamil Nadu, the movie that stars a host of newcomers follows the story of an alcoholic man who beats his wife. When his wife flees away from his abuse, he takes his little son along with him to bring her back home.
"First Production of @Rowdy_Pictures wins one of the most prestigious international award! First Tamil film to win this award... Can¡¯t be happier," tweeted Vignesh Shivan, who produced the movie under his home production banner Rowdy Pictures.?
"Feeling emotional!!!Pebbles won the Tiger Award 2021. Our Hardwork, patience & Dream finally came true.Thank you all for your love and support (sic)," wrote Vinothraj PS.
?For the unversed, The Tiger Award als comprises of a cash prize worth Euro 40,000, which is to be shared between the director and producer of the winning film.?
