Birthday Special: Two of Bollywood’s biggest superstars Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore are birth date twins, however, they were born 9 years apart. While the diva is celebrating her 80th birthday today (December 8), the He-man of Bollywood has turned 89. Over the years, the duo have starred in several movies together and were once one of the most sought-after on-screen pairings in Hindi cinema. 1. Anupama (1966)

Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Anupama starred Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore alongside Shashikala, Tarun Bose, Dulari, David, Deven Verma, Naina, Durga Khote, Surekha Pandit and Brahm Bhardwaj among others. The film’s plot revolves around Uma, a shy and introverted girl (Sharmila), who struggles with her self-esteem due to her mother's neglect. A writer/poet (Dharmendra) helps her come out of her shell, leading to a romantic narrative like never before.

2. Mere Humdum Mere Dost (1968)

Directed by Amar Kumar, this retro classic tells the story of friendship and love amidst the personal struggles of the two leads. Sharmila and Dharmendra’s chemistry in this one was a perfect blend of warmth and charm making both their romantic scenes memorable and this movie a hit. The ensemble also starred Rehman, Mumtaz, Om Prakash, Achala Sachdev, Nigar Sultana, Ruby Myers, Santosh Kumar, and Brahm Bhardwaj among others.

3. Satyakam (1969)

Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Satyakam follows the life of a man who stands by his principles despite societal pressures. Sharmila plays the role of his love interest who stands by him no matter what. Considered one of the best performances of the duo, this adaptation of Narayan Sanyal’s novel also stars Ashok Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, David, Sarika, Tarun Bose, Asrani, Dina Pathak, Manmohan, Rabi Ghosh, Baldev Khosa, Sapru, and Uma Dutt among others.

4. Devar (1966)

This classic movie was a tale of suppressed romance where Sharmila played a woman suffering in an abusive marriage with Dharmendra playing her brother-in-law. The two happened to fall in love during the film with its narrative emerging as a hylo-idealistic drama. Directed by Brij Sadanah, this romantic drama was set against the themes of trust and betrayal in the lead couple’s life testing their relationship. The movie is still known for several reasons. Sharmila Tagore with her outfits in Yakeen started a fashion revolution and because the movie became a massive hit, it also reinforced Dharmendra's star status in 1969.

7. Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka (1975)

Directed by Devendra Goel, this film revolves around love and relationships within a joint family setup. It explores the dynamics between family members and romantic partners. This ensemble composed by Ravi also featured Ashok Kumar, Leena Chandavarkar, Deven Verma, David, Ramesh Deo, Achala Sachdev, Mohan Sherry and Jagdish Raj among many others.
