Exploring Eminem's relationship with his mother
Over the years, Eminem's rocky relationship with his mother has made headlines several times, with the duo airing their dirty linens in public and outing some family secrets.
During his breakout years, Eminem publicly accused Debbie of being an absent parent. He also vented out at his mother in his 2002 song Cleanin' Out My Closet, rapping about his traumatic childhood and painful ordeals as a kid. He also sarcastically apologised to Debbie in the song but then eventually went on to show the ill-treatment he faced.
"I'm sorry, Mama/I never meant to hurt you/I never meant to make you cry/But tonight I'm cleanin' out my closet (One more time!)," he raps in the song.
Eminem was sued by his mother in 1999, further denting their already strained relationship. She also wrote a tell-all 2007 memoir, My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem, which explored the ins and outs of her tumultuous bond with her son.
After launching scathing attacks for over a decade, the mother-son duo have made numerous attempts at reconciliation in recent years. In 2013, the rapper made his first move towards strengthening their bond with his song Headlights in which he apologised, this time genuinely, to Debbie for using harsh words against her.
Their up-and-down relationship took a positive turn when congratulated Eminem on his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2022.
She shared, ¡°Marshall, I want to say, I could not let this day go by without congratulating you on your induction into the Hall of Fame. I love you very much. I knew you¡¯d get there. It¡¯s been a long ride. I¡¯m very, very proud of you.¡±
