One of the most prestigious movie awards, the Oscars has quite a complicated nomination process. Every year about 50-60 movies are selected. Here's the nomination process explained.
The eligibility begins on the first day of the Calendar year and ends on the last day.?There are two ways a film can be shortlisted. The first one is through the?rigorous application process (necessary documentation and meeting eligibility requirements -?that includes the film's release in?commercial motion picture theater in at least one of six U.S metropolitan areas?minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue and a run time of a minimum of 40 minutes for a feature film),?and the second one is an invitation to join The Academy directly (though almost every nominee gets an invite).
Among those eligible for the Oscars, some of the films are shortlisted as part of preliminary voting. Out of those, five to six movies are nominated in each category, which then compete for the final award.
The Academy reportedly has 9000 to 10000 members in the body, which has the right to vote. This is divided into 17 categories for different branches including actors, directors, editors etc.?
The members of the body have to vote for these specific branches, which means that only actors are allowed to vote for actors and directors for directors and so on. However, there's an exception. For the Best Picture category, everyone is allowed to vote. All of the members send five to ten nominations. For other categories, they cannot submit more than five nominations.
These nominations are ranked as per their preference. When a choice garners a specific count of top-ranking votes, often termed the "magic number," it attains nominee status.
While earlier only the films that have had theatrical release were allowed for submission, the rules changed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, the movies streaming online on various OTT platforms are also allowed for nominations. As per another rule change, now the Oscars reverted to nominating exactly 10 movies for Best Picture.
Oscars 2024 nominations will be announced on January 23.
