When the Oscar 2024 nominations were revealed on Tuesday morning, "Oppenheimer" put on an incredible performance with 13 nods, but many other potential candidates were unable to get off the ground.?
"Killers of the Flower Moon" fluctuated in popularity as the nominations were announced. Director Martin Scorsese's historical drama received critical nominations for picture, director, actress (Lily Gladstone), and supporting actor (Robert De Niro). However, the filmĄ¯s star Leonardo DiCaprio got snubbed and many hearts shattered into pieces.
Although Greta Gerwig is a well-known director, having directed three consecutive Best Picture nominees (Barbie, Little Women in 2019, and Ladybird in 2017), it appears that she was not nominated for Best Director for Barbie. Additionally, the film's lead actress, Margot Robbie, lost out on the Best Actress award nomination. Barbie was not completely excluded from the acting categories: Ryan Gosling received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken, while America Ferrera received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress, her first Oscar nomination in a long and illustrious career.
The actor, who received a nomination on Tuesday for his performance as Ken in the box office smash hit, called it a "disappointment" that Robbie and Gerwig did not receive nominations in their respective categories.
He said as per CNN,?Ą°I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought lĄ¯d being saying this, but IĄ¯m also incredibly honored and proud that itĄ¯s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that IĄ¯m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees.Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.Ąą
For the first time ever, Greta Gerwig, the filmmaker of Barbie, is among three female directors to have her film nominated for Best Picture, along with Justine Triet's Anatomy of a Fall and Celine Song's Past Lives. Making history herself, Lily Gladstone was the first Native American to receive a Best Actress nomination for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon.
Variety reports that Song is the first Asian woman to be nominated for Best Original Screenplay. Additionally, this year's nominations for two openly queer performersĄĒColman Domingo in Rustin and Jodie Foster in NYADĄĒrepresent the first time that queer actors have been recognized for their roles in films.
After playing Clifford "Cliff" Ellison in American Fiction, Sterling K. Brown was nominated for an Oscar for the first time in the Best Supporting Actor category. As Sofia in The Color Purple, the musical historical drama based on the 2005 Broadway production, which itself was based on Alice Walker's 1982 novel of the same name, Danielle Brooks was nominated for an Oscar for the first time. H¨šller has been the talk of the season, and many predicted that she would win best actress; yet, she did not register for the SAG Awards, a significant antecedent. Nonetheless, there is obviously a lot of affection for the film, as seen by her Oscar nomination for best actress.
