Robert Downey Jr. is determined to ensure that Marvel executives won't find peace if they ever attempt to recreate his iconic portrayal of Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, through artificial intelligence. He plans to take legal action and bring them to court, regardless of whether they pursue this after his death.
On a recent On With Kara Swisher podcast episode, Oscar-winning actor Robert Downey Jr. spoke candidly about his stance on AI recreations of the character, Iron Man.
He expressed a firm intention to "sue any future executives" who allow an AI-generated version of him.?
While he's confident that Marvel won't use AI to recreate his iconic role as Tony Stark¡ªgoing so far as to say,"I am not worried about them hijacking my character's soul because there's like three or four guys and gals who make all the decisions there anyway and they would never do that to me, with or without me" ¡ªhe's less trusting of future studio heads.
In an exchange with Swisher, when she suggested that future execs may want to digitally revive his likeness, Downey replied, "Well, you're right. I would like to here state that I intend to sue all future executives just on spec."
When Swisher mentioned that he may not be around to see this, Downey Jr, said, "But my law firm will still be very active."
Currently starring in McNeal on Broadway¡ªa play that explores themes of AI, artistic integrity, and corporate influence¡ªDowney called out leaders in the AI industry, including OpenAI's Sam Altman, saying, "The problem is when these individuals believe that they are the arbiters of managing this but meanwhile are wanting and/or needing to be seen in a favorable light. That is a massive fucking error. It turns me off and makes me not want to engage with them because they are not being truthful."
Well, Robert Downey Jr. may not always be playing Iron Man, but he's clearly ready to suit up against AI any moment.
