India has a lot of fans of Christopher Nolan, the ace filmmaker who is known for her mind-bending movies. The advance booking for the movie began three weeks prior to its release and seeing the demand, cinema hall owners added 3 AM shows too. However, after watching the movie a lot of people were left disappointed as it hurt religious sentiments.?
While many Bollywood movies have been embroiled in similar controversies before, this was a rarity for a Hollywood film. One scene that shows Cillian Murphy who essays the titular role of J Robert Oppenheimer reading verses in Sanskrit from Bhagavad Gita while having sex is courting controversy. It sparked outrage not only on Twitter but also from Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur.?
As per a report on NDTV, Thakur has questioned the Central Board of Film Certification over how it passed the film's controversial scene. Furthermore, he has urged the body to delete/cut a particular scene from the film.?
"Action could also be taken against the officials who had given the clearance," as per the sources to Indian Express.?
"Anurag Thakur expressed his displeasure over the CBFC's failure to safeguard the interests of the public, emphasizing that such negligence cannot be overlooked. He asserted that the board members would be held responsible for their actions, signalling a clear message of accountability," an insider told Hindustan Times.??
"It's (the scene) an insult to Bhagavad Gita, which is our holy book. It sends out powerful and meaningful messages to the entire world. How could someone demean it this way? The scene is an assault on our values and civilisation. It's an assault on the Hindu community," he said as per ANI. "Nolan should remove this scene from the film. It reeks of religious hatred. If he doesn't take out the scene, we will act," he added.
