When an object has a deep and painful history attached, it surely doesn't belong at an event like the Met Gala. One of the world's biggest fashion events is organised in New York every year and celebrities display their extravagant costumes in full glory.?This year, influencer Emma Chamberlain's look has left Twitter unhappy.?
As per news reports, the Maharaja Of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh, owned the piece of jewellery and commissioned Cartier to develop it in 1928, featuring the gigantic De Beers diamond. The Maharaja had bought the large diamond in 1989 and it featured as the centrepiece of the necklace.?
The neckpiece came to be known as the Patiala Necklace and went missing from the Patiala Royal Treasury in 1948. The whereabouts of the precious piece of jewellery remained unknown until the De Beers diamond surfaced at a?Sotheby's auction in the year 1982.
A Twitter user wrote, "Thanks #cartier. Those are the jewels of the Maharaja of Patiala. That¡¯s a piece of India¡¯s stolen history, not a fancy piece of jewellery to lend out to celebrities. Disrespectful on so many levels."
Another user wrote, "So i just found out Emma Chamberlain wore the maharaja of patiala¡¯s necklace at the met gala¡ this is wayyy worse than kim wearing marilyn monroe¡¯s dress. It has a deep and painful history attached to it. Very on theme, nothing screams gilded glamour quite like expropriation."
