In response to the recent scandal surrounding Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's deepfake porn videos, Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has voiced her thoughts, shedding light on the pervasive issue of online harassment faced by women.
Taking to her Instagram story, Ranaut expressed her stance, stating that despite achieving success, no woman is immune to the perils of sexism, bullying, and harassment in the digital realm.
Ranaut shared a news report detailing Meloni's legal actions against the perpetrators of the deepfake videos, accompanied by her commentary, "No woman can escape sexism, bullying, and harassment, and we think being successful is going to make us feel safe and respected. Shame."
The actress's remarks underscore the urgent need for collective action to combat cyberbullying and protect the dignity and safety of women online.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is fighting back against the misuse of artificial intelligence through deepfake technology. She is demanding €100,000 (about Rs 90 lakh) in damages after a fake pornographic video featuring her surfaced online and gained millions of views on a US pornographic website.
As reported by the BBC, Meloni will testify in court in Sassari, Sardinia, on July 2 against the accused. A 40-year-old man is accused of using Meloni's likeness to create the explicit deepfake video, with his 73-year-old father also implicated. Both face defamation charges, punishable in Italy by up to 3 years in prison. Authorities have tracked the mobile device used to upload the video, strengthening the case.
Meloni's lawyer, Maria Giulia Marongiu, clarified that the monetary compensation sought is symbolic, aiming to empower women who face such abuses. Notably, the deepfake video emerged in 2022, coinciding with Meloni's appointment as Prime Minister.
For those unfamiliar, deepfake videos digitally superimpose one person's face onto another's with malicious intent. In India, such videos targeting celebrities like Akshay Kumar and Alia Bhatt have circulated, often aiming to damage their reputations or extort money. With Lok Sabha elections approaching in India, combating deepfake technology is crucial to preventing misinformation and safeguarding democracy.
