The remuneration of actors has always been a fascinating talking point for the internet and it has been constantly spiking over time. There was a time during the '80s when Hindi cinema star Amitabh Bachchan emerged as an undisputed money maker and pushed his Rs 10 lakh fee to Rs 50 lakh. He reigned the throne for the longest time until a south star came to take his price point higher than a crore.
Can you guess? Let us tell you.
It was in 1992, that Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi featured on the cover of The Week magazine which was headlined - 'Bigger than Bachchan'. Their reason? Chiranjeevi breached the Rs 1-crore fee barrier by charging Rs 1.25 crore for the film Aapadbandhavudu (1992). This was the same time, Big B was on a break from acting post-Khuda Gawah leaving room for Chiranjeevi to achieve this feat.
Talking about other top actors of that time like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Sunny Deol - all of them used to charge between Rs 60-80 lakh per film.
Well, it took no time to breach this benchmark for other actors.?Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth joined the club in 1994 by starting to charge Rs 1 crore per film. Amitabh Bachchan returned to showbiz in 1996 retaining his top spot and became the first Bollywood actor to seek Rs 1 crore per film. Sridevi followed suit and became the first female actor to make a similar ask.
It so happened that Bollywood¡¯s economics changed drastically by the end of the 90s and by the end of the millennium, superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan started charging Rs 2-3 crore per film. Ever since then, there¡¯s no looking back for the star entourage and increasing remunerations.
