Known for his neo-noir thrillers that usually leave everyone scratching their heads in the end because of the mind-bending twist and climax, Sriram Raghavan is back with another film Merry Christmas, which stars unconventional pair - Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi.?
The filmmaker who has admitted that he grew up watching Albert Hitchcock movies and is inspired by his style is winning praise for the movie. While the first half is a bit slow, the second one will keep you on the edge of the seat. While some people felt that the ending was quite predictable, others were left stunned.
Merry Christmas ends with Albert (Vijay Sethupathi) sitting on the bench in the Police station with a smile on his face. Did he kill Jerome or was he murdered by his wife Maria (Katrina Kaif)??
Although Albert confesses to Maria that he murdered his girlfriend and doesn't want to get involved in another criminal case, he ends up tangling up his name in the murder case.?
After the cops have left, Maria goes into the second apartment where she finds Albert. She then confesses the crime and tells him how and why she killed her husband Jerome. She reveals she arranged for a replica of her apartment on a different floor to frame an unsuspecting stranger for the crime.
While Albert initially refuses to be involved, he however helps Maria who uses another pawn?Ronnie Fernandes (Sanjay Kapoor) to cover up her crime. Together, they incinerate the fabricated evidence from the second apartment. While doing so, Albert finds Ronnie's wallet, which he intends to submit in the lost and found box in the church.
The following day, the police are convinced that Jerome's death is a suicide based on the crime scene evidence. However, Ronnie's statement about his wallet changes the game. Now, Police are looking for the person who took away his wallet and is likely the murderer as well. While Albert is on his way to the Church to keep his wallet back, he is summoned for questioning. He corroborates Ronnie's account and leaves his signature origami swan on the table so that Maria knows he has already given his statement. The authorities, perplexed by identical statements from Maria, Ronnie and Albert decide to close the case as a suicide. However, Maria's daughter Annie brings another twist to the tale.
As the Police are preparing to leave, Annie unintentionally points to Albert as the one who gave her a forgotten toy. It's almost clear that Maria killed Jerome. At this point, Albert surrenders Ronnie's wallet to the police indicating he is the murderer. He then proposes to Maria amidst the chaotic police station. Maria accepts, and Albert confesses to Jerome's murder, concluding the film on a dramatic note.??
