International pop sensation Rihanna made a stylish entrance into India's Jamnagar for the pre-wedding festivities of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant and then rocked the stage on Day 01 of the three-day party.
Amid speculations about the Ambanis' lavish welcome and the purpose behind Rihanna's visit, the singer found herself in the midst of renewed controversy.
Social Media Stir Over A Three-Year-Old Tweet
As Rihanna's performance in Jamnagar and her arrival videos flooded social media, netizens revisited a tweet she posted three years ago. The tweet featured a CNN story on the 2021 farmers' protest in New Delhi, with Rihanna questioning, "Why aren¡¯t we talking about this?"
The post had sparked a backlash at the time from many Indians.
In 2021, farmers from various Indian states protested against the Union government's introduction of three farm laws in September 2020. Concerned about potential income reductions and supply chain disruptions, farmers' unions joined the widespread protests across North India.
Rihanna's tweet during this period drew criticism from government supporters, including notable figures like Kangana Ranaut, Gajendra Chauhan, and cricketer Pragyan Ojha.
As Rihanna's visit coincided with a new wave of farmers' protests starting on February 13, social media users revisited the 2021 controversy.
The trolling against Rihanna resumed, echoing sentiments from the previous year.
One of the users said, "Rihana is in the country guys. We need her to tweet about the farmer's protest once more!"
Another wrote, "So can u explain why rihanna not attending farmers protest now even though she is in india???"
One jokingly commented, "She finally arrived for the farmers protest in India via Ambani's"
Rihanna's visit to India is in celebration of ongoing festivities, with the pre-wedding celebrations of the Ambani family's youngest son set to continue in Jamnagar this weekend. The wedding itself is planned for July.
