John Abraham is in the limelight because of his latest film The Diplomat, which hit the screens today (March 14). The action drama has piqued the curiosity of fans as it features him in a suave new avatar.??John, who began his career in 2003 with Jism, has carved a niche for himself with his sincere performances and dashing looks. He, however, is not considered to be a top draw despite his talent. So, what is the reason behind this?
John Abraham has over the years impressed critics with his performances in films such as Vedaa and Madras Cafe. This critical acclaim has, however, rarely translated to commercial success. According to Rohit Jaiswal, a trade analyst, John needs to promote his films more aggressively in order to find success.?
¡°He is a known face but not a superstar. If you are a star you have to put in effort. You have to be in the public eye? to gain the confidence of the public. You simply can¡¯t just release a trailer on X (formerly known as Twitter) and expect people to watch it,¡± he told Indiatimes.?
John¡¯s last release Vedaa, in particular, failed to create excitement among fans despite the hard-hitting content as it wasn¡¯t promoted too strongly. As a result, it was completely overshadowed by Shraddha Kapoor¡¯s Stree 2. The horror comedy benefitted from being a sequel. The catchy Aaj Ki Raat song too added to the hype?
According to Manobala Vijayabalan, John¡¯s inability to consistently choose the right script too has made it difficult for him to emerge as an A-lister.?
¡°Consistently choosing the right script plays a vital role. If one film works with the audience and the next five don¡¯t,then for the? 6th film the audience will hesitate to visit the cinema halls. In order to achieve box office success, tier 2 actors need to keep guessing the audience¡¯s pulse and do films in multiple genres with strong storylines,¡± he said.?
A look at John¡¯s filmography reveals that he has tasted success only sporadically over the last decade. In 2018, he delivered a massive hit with Satyameva Jayate. The actioner collected over Rs 100 crore at the box office and clicked with the masses. John, however, failed to keep the momentum going as films such as Romeo Akbar Walter, Pagalpanti, and Mumbai Saga did not live up to expectations. Similarly, he was unable to capitalise on the phenomenal response to Pathaan (2023) as Vedaa collected merely Rs 26 crore and sank without a trace.?
Coming back to The Diplomat, it is an actioner that centres on the titular character as he deals with unexpected issues after a woman enters the embassy and asks for refuge.? The cast is headlined by John Abraham and Sadia Khateeb of Shikara fame. The film is directed by Shivam Nair, best known for his work on Ahista Ahista and Naam Shabana.
