In a nostalgic dive into the history of Bollywood, let's get a look at controversial quotes that once sent shockwaves through the Hindi film industry and started debates among fans.
These provocative statements, uttered by some of Bollywood's most prominent stars, not only stirred controversy but also shed light on the complexities of fame, identity, and societal norms within the glitzy realm of Indian cinema.
Bollywood actress Rimi Sen sparked controversy with a racist remark about the beauty of African people in an interview in 2006.
Speaking to Nithin Sethi of Glamsham.com about her role in the film Golmaal, Sen commented, "Rohit Shetty is amazing as a director. He can make even a black African look pretty." This comment was uncalled for and unrelated to the film's storyline.
Many protests by the African community in India were also carried out against Sen at that time.
In 1996, during the shooting of "Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi," rumours swirled about a possible romance between Akshay Kumar and Rekha. However, Raveena Tandon, who was secretly dating Akshay at the time, intervened to clarify. In an interview, she stated, "I don't think Akshay ever had anything to do with Rekha. As a matter of fact, he would run away from her." Raveena emphasised that Akshay tolerated Rekha because of the film but dismissed any romantic involvement between them.
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, after Vivek Oberoi's press conference against Salman Khan, criticised Vivek, calling his actions a grave mistake. He then feared working with Oberoi due to his potential backlash and emphasised the need for respect towards actresses. Additionally, he suggested that the media should cover Oberoi's household events and criticise Oberoi for commenting on Salman's personal matters and relationships.
He then said, "I think Vivek Oberoi has committed the biggest blunder ever by any actor in Mumbai. He is so powerful. He knows kick-boxing and karate. [US President George W] Bush should call back his army from Iraq and send Vivek instead. I am very scared of Vivek. I will never be able to work with him now. I may shout at him on the sets, and he may call a press conference against me. All the heroines should touch his feet to protect their dignity."
The musician made a random statement, sending everyone into splits, "When I go abroad, women throw themselves at me. But I'm not into one-night stands or flings.
When writer Shobhaa De criticised Sonam's acting in one of her films, the actress tweeted, "Guys, please don't take Shobhaa De seriously. She's a fossil who's getting no action and going through menopause."
On being asked whether he would work with Kareena Kapoor, Shahid replied, "If my director wants me to work with a cow or a buffalo, as an actor, I am ready to do it."
The actor sent out signals no woman was interested in, "The best way to sober me down is by kissing me all over.
After her breakup with Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika appeared on Karan Johar's celeb talk show, Koffee With Karan, and said that she would like to gift a packet of condoms to Ranbir. "He uses them so much.
After being tagged as a bombshell after her films Khwahish and Murder, Mallika said, "I feel sad for actresses who are not sexy. Poor things, Yaarti, I am happy to be a sex symbol."
Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor, and Ajay Devgn share an intriguing history. Ajay, who was dating Raveena, sparked a connection with Karisma while working together on the film "Jigar." Eventually, Ajay chose to end his relationship with Raveena in favour of Karisma. Unable to cope with the rejection, Raveena accused Ajay of being unfaithful.
In a fiery interview, the actress made a regrettable racist remark and targeted Ajay and Karisma. Speaking to Stardust, which featured her on the cover, Raveena Tandon stated, "She can keep Ajay. I am not interested. When Ajay Karisma have babies, they will look like Zebras."
