Dhanteras or Dhan Trayodashi marks the beginning of Diwali festivities in several parts of the country. It is observed on the Trayodashi Tithi, Krishna Paksha of the Kartik month (Thirteenth day of the waning phase of the Lunar fortnight in the Hindu month of Kartik as per the Purnimant calendar).?
It must also be noted that the day of Dhanteras is also observed as Dhanwantari Triodasi or Dhanvantri Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the God of Ayurveda.
Legend has it that Lord Dhanvantari imparted the knowledge of Ayurveda to humanity to alleviate the burdens of illness. Interestingly, the Ministry of AYUSH officially designates Dhanteras as "National Ayurveda Day."
Observed two days before Diwali Puja, it commemorates the birth of Lord Dhanvantari, the God of Ayurveda and the avatar of Lord Vishnu.
The word Dhanteras is derived from Dhan means wealth in Hindi and Teras which means thirteenth. On Dhanteras, Lakshmi Puja is performed and Diyas are lighted in the evening.
On the morning of Dhanteras, people prepare to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, into their homes. They dress in new clothes, decorate their houses, and create rangolis (colourful designs) at their front doors using rice flour, gulal powder, and flower petals. Rangolis are said to attract Goddess Lakshmi and bring good fortune.
To perform the Sthapana ritual, place images of Lord Dhanvantari (the god of health), Mata Mahalakshmi, and Lord Kubera (the god of wealth) on a red cloth. Light diyas (oil lamps), ghee lamps, and incense sticks in front of them. Offer red flowers, fruits, and sweets as Bhog. You can also offer your household's metal utensils and jewelry to the gods to pray for more wealth.
