The Shattila Ekadashi is observed on the Ekadashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha of the Magh month every year. It is named Shattila because, on this day, sesame is used in six different ways according to the scriptures. It is believed that if you worship Lord Vishnu with sesame seeds, it opens the door to salvation for you.

Ekadasi has two rules which are known as Smartha and Vaishnava. The Smartha rule is simple - Ekadashi should be visible at the time of local sunrise. The Vaishnava follows Ekadashi which is not contaminated by Dashami tithi. Vaishnava fasting day might be one day after of Smartha fasting day.
