Hiranyakashipu resorted to violence and brutality to coerce people into worshiping him. He punished those who worshipped the Gods because he sought domination and control. While many succumbed to his pressure, his son, Prahlad, resisted. Prahlad refused to elevate his father to the status of a deity and remained steadfast in his devotion to Lord Vishnu. Additionally, Hiranyakashipu's complacency stemmed from a boon granted to him by Brahma, the creator. This boon bestowed upon him the following benefits:
- Neither a man nor an animal can be the cause of Hiranyakashipu's death.
- He can neither be killed during the day or at night.
- No weapon can kill him.
- He can neither be executed on earth or in the sky.
- And he can neither be killed indoors or outdoors.
Knowing that the boon would shield him, Hiranyakashipu embraced brutality without a hint of remorse. He became so ruthless that he resolved to kill his own son. Despite numerous attempts, he failed to carry out his sinister plan. On one occasion, he challenged Prahalad to prove the existence of Lord Vishnu. Prahalad invoked God within one of the pillars of his palace. When Hiranyakashipu attempted to destroy the pillar with his mace, he was astounded to witness Lord Narasimha emerging from it. Lord Vishnu took the form of Narasimha to annul the effects of Brahma's boon and vanquish Hiranyakashipu. As the name suggests, Narasimha was part-man, part-lion. He slew Hiranyakashipu at twilight with his claws, while holding him on his lap and standing at the palace's threshold.
