Mathura's Huranga Fest 2024: While the Lathmar Holi festival, celebrated a few days before Holi, is well known, the Huranga festivities at the Dauji Temple near Mathura are less famous. Taking place a day after Holi, the Huranga festival involves a rather peculiar ritual.
Celebrated after Holi, the Huranga festival is marked with strange rituals¡ªmen trying to drench women with water colours, and the women reciprocating by tearing off the wet clothes of the men and then whipping them with it.
Huranga is traditionally played between ¡°bhabhis¡± and ¡°devars¡± (sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law), officials of the temple said.
According to the Temple priest, Lord Krishna used to play this Holi with Revati (wife of Krishna¡¯s brother Baldeo).

Why You Must Experience Vrindavan Holi At Least Once In A Lifetime!
On the day after Holi, Huranga Holi is celebrated at Dauji temple, located in Baldeo, about 30 km outside Mathura, India. The tradition dates back to more than 500 years, when the Krishna temple was established. Huranga Holi is a game where women from the family that established the temple, playfully tear off the mens shirts and beat them up with strips of their own clothes, in the temple courtyard. Men retaliate drenching women with buckets of liquid colours. After some hours the temple is awash with coloured water. It¡¯s a huge family with about 3000 members now, and they all come to the village from across the world for the festival. Being covered in colour brings relative anonymity, and in largely conservative India, this means Holi is a time when men and women and boys and girls can socialize with relative freedom.
Mathura Holi is renowned for its rich culture and traditions, with Dauji Holi serving as a prime illustration. The Huranga Holi festivities typically take place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., showcasing the unique customs and vibrant spirit of the celebration.
