Ramadan also known as Ramazan, the?ninth month, is one of the?holiest in the Islamic calendar. Muslims worldwide follow sawm (fasting - one of the five pillars of Islam) to commemorate the sacred month. Therefore, Ramadan rituals are observed for 29-30 days from the first sighting of the crescent moon to the other. Moon sighting is important to decide the beginning and the end of the month of Ramadan.
Muslim community observes fast (Roza) from dawn to dusk. After the day is over, in the evening, they break their fast (Roza) by eating meals, known as Iftar with family or friends.?It is believed that by refraining from food and water throughout the day, one understands the pain and suffering of other people and gets closer to the almighty God (Allah).

Ramadan has its roots in the 7th century when Prophet Muhammad received the first verses of the Quran, IslamĄ¯s holy book. According to Islamic beliefs, this revelation started on the 27th night of Ramadan, known as Laylat al-Qadr or the Night of Power. This night is considered the holiest of the year, and prayers offered on this occasion are believed to be more rewarding than a thousand months of worship.
Fasting during Ramadan follows a command in the Quran to "fast for a set number of days." Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, avoiding food, drink, and other physical needs during daylight hours. The daily fast is ended at sunset with iftar, a meal that usually includes dates, water, and a light dish. After iftar, Muslims perform the Maghrib prayer, which is one of the five daily prayers in Islam.
Ramadan is also a time for spiritual growth, prayer, and generosity. Many Muslims aim to read the entire Quran during the month, and mosques hold special prayers and study sessions. Giving to charity is highly encouraged, and many mosques and organisations arrange food donations and other aid efforts to support those in need.
