International Women¡¯s 2024: Every year, March 8 is celebrated as International Women¡¯s Day. Women exhibit strength, power, and resilience that knows no bounds. Amidst a constant stream of affirmations amplifying the essence of women every day, the need for a dedicated day to honor their accomplishments across various facets of life becomes apparent. Whether occupying roles as educators, homemakers, economists, engineers, or trailblazers, women consistently contribute to making the world a better place through their unwavering strength, resolve, and convictions.
Defying the constraints of patriarchy, women are surmounting societal obstacles daily, emerging as an increasingly formidable force in contemporary times. This International Women's Day, we commemorate and celebrate the remarkable achievements of women globally in social, economic, cultural, and political spheres. The day also serves as a call to action, urging collective efforts to expedite the realisation of gender parity. As women worldwide unite, a myriad of activities unfolds to either honour women's accomplishments or advocate for equality.
Observed annually on March 8, this special day recognises the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, while also highlighting the ongoing fight for gender equality.
The theme for International Women's Day 2024 is "Inspire Inclusion." This signifies that when we express appreciation and respect for women irrespective of their diverse backgrounds¡ªsuch as their origin, financial status, and political beliefs¡ªit contributes to the overall improvement of the world. Creating an environment where women feel a sense of belonging and importance not only strengthens them but also empowers them, ultimately leading to positive impacts for everyone.
In 1908, a crucial debate among women regarding their oppression and inequality was underway. The call for change gained momentum as 15,000 women marched through New York City, demanding shorter hours, better pay, and voting rights. The first Women's Day in the United States was observed in 1909. A pivotal moment occurred in 1910 with an International conference of working women in Copenhagen, where Clara Zetkin, a leader of the Women's Office for the Social Democratic Party in Germany, proposed the idea. In 1911, International Women's Day was first celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland on March 19. Russia joined in between 1913 and 1914, marking their first Women's Day on February 23. The global acceptance of March 8 as the day to celebrate International Women's Day came later. The United Nations officially celebrated it for the first time in 1975.
The colours associated with International Women's Day are purple, green, and white. Purple symbolises justice and dignity, green represents hope, and white signifies purity. Originating from the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the UK in 1908, these colours carry historical significance.
It's important to note that International Women's Day is not confined to any specific country, group, or organisation; it belongs to women worldwide. Let us recognise, celebrate, and enhance the visibility of women's achievements. Increased awareness through meaningful narratives, resources, and activities is crucial to combat gender bias and discrimination.
Complacency is not an option; everyone should contribute to achieving gender parity. Wishing all the ladies a very Happy Women's Day!
