But how does air pollution affect hair quality? Let¡¯s understand from our experts
Air pollution can not only affect your physical well-being but also the quality of your hair. You must have noticed that with increasing pollution your hair health must be worsening. ¡°The harmful particles in the air like chemicals, dust, dirt particles, bacteria, germs, viruses, dander, chemicals, vehicle emissions, and smoke can have a significant impact on your hair,¡± says Dr.? Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics.?
Air pollution damages hair quality by causing dryness, brittleness, and dullness. Pollutants like particulate matter (PM), ozone, and nitrogen dioxide penetrate the hair shaft, leading to breakage, frizz, and colour fade. Hair's natural moisture barrier is disrupted, making it prone to damage and slowing growth.
Dr Kapoor adds, ¡°It can also damage the natural oil present in your scalp and hair which is responsible for making you look shiny and healthy. This is why it becomes crucial to take proactive steps to protect your hair from the adverse effects of air pollution.¡±
Air pollution may contribute to hair loss, although it still lacks strong evidence, Dr Rashmi Sriram, Consultant-Dermatology, Fortis Hospital, Rajaji Nagar shares, ¡°Some of the risk factors that may damage the hair quality include living in urban areas with high pollution levels, frequent outdoor activities, smoking, and using heating styling tools.¡±
While, individuals with pre-existing hair conditions, like dryness or dandruff, are more susceptible. Other factors include humidity, temperature, and exposure to chemicals in hair products.
Moreover, the toxic air pollutants can settle on your scalp as well as hair which can cause extreme dryness and hair fall. ¡°This can lead to clogged hair follicles, weak and brittle hair strands, and frizzy hair. It can also damage the natural oil present in your scalp and hair which is responsible for making your look shiny and healthy. This is why it becomes crucial to take proactive steps to protect your hair from the adverse effects of air pollution,¡± explains Dr Kapoor.?
