The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi is arguably one of the most prestigious and recognisable names in the medical field in India, and the faculty there want the institute to be known the way it has been since 1956.
The Faculty Association of AIIMS (FAIMS) on Thursday wrote to Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya expressing concern over the proposal of assigning a new name to it and argued that renaming it will lead to a loss of the institute's identity.
AIIMS Delhi was created in 1956 with a trinity of mission for medical education, research and patient care, the letter said.
"FAIMS came to know from the media regarding the news of a proposal of changing the name of AIIMS with the name of a famous personality or place. FAIMS had sort opinions from all faculty members regarding this proposal all faculty members and unanimously shared their opposition to changing the name of AIIMS, Delhi," the letter read.
"An identity is linked with the name. If the identity is lost, institutional recognition is lost both within the country and outside."
"That is why famous and established institutes have the same names for centuries -- Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard universities," the letter said.
The FAIMS said if the proposal is accepted, the esteemed medical institute will face a huge loss of identity and demoralisation.
"Hence, FAIMS requests you to please do not consider any proposal for changing the name of AIIMS Delhi. This will help to maintain the premier and mentor institute status of AIIMS Delhi with respect to others in the country," the letter said.
Recently the government had proposed that the 23 AIIMS, including existing ones and those which are yet to become operational be named after local heroes, freedom fighters, unsung heroes or historical monuments of the area.
All the new AIIMS were requested to suggest three to four names in each category (local heroes, freedom fighters, unsung heroes or historical monuments) along with an explanatory note for the suggested names.
Currently, the various AIIMS set up or being set up under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) are known by the generic name AIIMS, distinguished only by the place of their location.
Suggestion regarding names has been given to AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Patna, AIIMS Raipur, AIIMS Rishikesh, AIIMS Nagpur, AIIMS Raebareli, and AIIMS Madurai.
