The hunt is on for two terrorists in the Anantnag encounter, a day after three officers were killed in a gunfight.?According to the police, two militants were hiding in the area, and a contact was established in the morning.?
In the gunfight that broke out with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag on Wednesday, a commanding officer, a Major and a Deputy Superintendent of Police of the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Police were killed.?
The deceased officers were identified as Colonel Manpreet Singh, Major Ashish Dhonack, and DSP Humayun Bhat. Despite immediate reinforcements, they could not be evacuated due to heavy firing.?
The situation remains tense, as security forces are still attempting to neutralize the threat posed by terrorists.?
Here is what went down in the Anantnag encounter:?
On Tuesday night, the army and police had launched a joint operation in response to specific intelligence about terrorists in the area.?The troops came under heavy fire from the terrorists, who launched an ambush-style attack.?
The attack was claimed by The Resistance Front, an offshoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The unit claimed it was an act of revenge for killing their leader, Riyaz Ahmed, in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) earlier this month.?Unidentified gunmen had on September 8 shot dead the top terrorist commander Riyaz Ahmad alias Abu Qasim of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) inside Al-Qudus mosque in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir's Rawalkot. He was one of the main conspirators behind the Dhangri terror attack on January 1,? where seven people were killed and 13 injured when terrorists struck Dhangri village in Rajouri district and fired indiscriminately.?
However, sources suggested that the same terrorist module responsible for the Poonch attack is behind the incident in Anantnag.?
On Thursday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police announced that they have "encircled" two LeT terrorists, one of whom has been identified as Uzair Khan.?
When Major Ashish Dhonack bid goodbye to his family, including his two-year-old daughter, one and a half months ago, he promised to return to Haryana in October to help his family move house.?
Instead, weeks later, his body reached from Anantnag's Kokorenag area.?
Humayun Bhat, son of retired Inspector General of J&K Police Ghulam Hassan Bhat, had become a father just a month ago. A young officer, he had completed just five years of service with the J&K Police, including a difficult tenure in the Special Operations Group that deals exclusively with anti-terrorist operations.?
On the fateful day, Colonel Singh, commander of the Sikh Light Infantry who was awarded the Sena Medal (Gallantry) in 2021, had told his family he would speak later. But that later never came to be.?
"This is very saddening. The entire country's sympathies are with the martyrs. The government should take this seriously and investigate how this incident happened. They need to take action," said Delhi minister Gopal Rai.? ??
