The frenzy of mob taking matters into their own hand has claimed another innocent life, once again triggered by rumors on social media.
A 40-year-old woman was beaten to death by a mob in Ahmedabad after mistaking her and her relatives for child-lifters.
Shanti Marwadi who belonged to Navnath, a nomadic tribe Pali district of Rajasthan had moved to the city 15 days ago along with thirty-three people from the tribe to earn a living.
However someone made a video of them claiming that these were child-lifters from outside the state.
After the message got widely circulated on social media, a mob of around 30 persons attacked four women on Tuesday afternoon when they were travelling in an auto rickshaw.
They were rescued by cops reached the spot and and took them to a hospital, but Shantiben died at the civil hospital.
¡°It is possible that she may have died due to a head injury as the auto had been overturned by the mob. We have identified some of the suspects,¡± a police officer said.
Anasiben Marwadi, who was related to the deceased and was with her at the time of the incident, told PTI that some men came on motorbikes and intercepted them at Juna Vadaj when they were travelling in an auto. ¡°They accused us of being child-lifters. More locals joined them and overturned the auto. They then punched and kicked us,¡± Anansiben alleged.
