After a celebrated career in the Indian Army, Meru retired from service recently and received a perfect send-off as he entered retirement life. Meru, a 9-year-old tracker dog from the 22 Army Dog Unit, retired recently and will spend the rest of his life at the Dogs Retirement Home at the Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) Center in Meerut.
Photos of Meru's journey to his new home have gone viral on social media, earning praise from animal lovers and others. In the?photos, Meru can?be seen?boarding a train and traveling in a first AC coach on his way to the retirement home.

"Army Tracker Dog Meru from the 22 Army Dog Unit boarded a train to Meerut on retirement. He will spend the rest of his days at the Dogs Retirement Home at the Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) Center. He is traveling AC first class. The Ministry of Defence recently permitted service dogs on retirement to travel AC 1st with their handlers," Ashok Bijalwan, who shared the photos of Meru on X, wrote.
Many on social media thanked Meru for his service and also appreciated the gesture of the Indian Army. Others also expressed their desire to adopt Meru and wanted to know if it was possible.
The Indian Army has made it possible for civilians to adopt army dogs after their retirement. Anyone wanting to adopt retired army dogs?can submit an affidavit to the RVC Centre and College in Meerut Cantt or their headquarters in Delhi.?A bond is signed by the person adopting the dog, ensuring?he/she?will?take care of?the dog.

The Indian Army has dogs from breeds?including?Great Swiss Mountain, German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, Labrador Retrievers, Cocker Spaniel?and?Labrador, who undergo rigorous training. They perform crucial roles including in search and rescue missions, sniffing out explosives and drugs, etc.?
