Amid the raging debate over toxic work culture in the corporate sector, following the tragic death of Anna Sebastian Perayil, a Chartered Accountant with EY, who allegedly died due to health complications caused by work pressure, an old video of businessman Ashneer Grover has resurfaced online. In the video that has gone viral, Grover can be heard speaking about what happened when he joined Ernst & Young (EY) as a partner.
In the video, Grover said that after resigning as the chief financial officer of grocery delivery service Grofers, he was offered a job at EY with a salary package of Rs 1 crore.?
¡°I took a quick tour, pretended to have chest pain, and asked them if I could leave," Grover said, recalling his first visit to the EY office.
According to Grover, he only saw dead people there, whose last rites were remaining.
"They were such dead people, only their last rites were remaining," Grover said.
He also said that offices where people fight are the best and work only gets done there.
"If someone says a place has a toxic culture, that¡¯s a good place. Real work happens there. You¡¯ll find plenty of other non-toxic places," he said.
Another industrialist, Harsh Goenka, however, disagreed with Grover and called his comment baffling.
"It¡¯s baffling to see anyone advocate for a toxic environment," Goenka wrote, while posting the video of Grover.
Goenka, the Chairman of RPG Enterprises, has been vocal about bringing positive changes in workplaces following the death of 26-year-old CA.
"India Inc must take urgent action following EY¡¯s Anna Sebastian Perayil's tragic death to foster a healthier workplace culture: 1. Prioritise Well-being: Implement mental health programs, manageable workloads, and wellness initiatives. 2. Support New Hires: Offer mentorship to help employees adjust to new roles and environments. 3. Tackle Burnout: End the glorification of overwork; reward efficiency, not long hours. 4. Foster Open Communication: Address employee concerns without fear of retaliation. 5. Accountable Leadership: Hold leaders responsible for toxic work environments. 6. Promote Work-Life Balance: Set clear boundaries between work and personal time, respecting employee well-being. Real change, not condolences, is what¡¯s needed," he wrote in a post.
