Riding on a sudden wave that not even many in the party leadership saw coming, the BJP is set to retain power in Haryana. The BJP, led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, is well on course to register a hat-trick in Haryana.?This is despite a wave of anti-incumbency and all exit polls predicting a Congress win in Haryana.
The BJP crossed the majority mark of 46 in the Assembly by leading on 49 seats and maintained its lead, while the Congress was on 35, according to the latest trends available on the Election Commission website.??
But it was not easy sailing for the BJP, especially in the initial rounds, which suggested that Congress was set to sweep the election much like the exit polls had predicted.??
However, as the day progressed, the BJP managed to play catch-up with Congress before taking the lead for the first time. Once the BJP crossed the 46-seat mark, the party maintained its lead till the finish line, leaving Congress, which had started early celebrations anticipating a big win, in a state of shock.??
While the unexpected results in Haryana are definitely a setback to Congress, especially in the upcoming polls in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, it is not all bad news for the party.?Congress and its ally, the National Conference (NC), are on track for a resounding victory in Jammu and Kashmir.?
The NC-Congress alliance is leading in 51 seats in the 90-member house, where the majority mark is 46. The BJP is leading in 28, while the PDP has been reduced to just two seats in the first assembly elections since Jammu and Kashmir ceased to be a state and became a Union Territory.
