Ayodhya Ram Mandir: Know The Role These Lesser-Known People Played In Ram Janmabhoomi Movement
Ending the generations-long wait of Hindus to see the Ram Temple in the place where Lord Rama was born, the Ram Mandir has become a reality.
It is the culmination of a long and relentless pursuit by the Hindus to reclaim the birthplace of Lord Rama, which started in 1853, with the Nirmohi Akhara occupying the Babri Masjid site.
Since then the Ram Janmabhoomi has seen many twists and turns until the 12019 Supreme Court order, paving the way for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
While the Ram Janmabhoomi had many prominent leaders like LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and there are many others, who are often forgotten but played key roles.
Here are some of them:
Abhiram Das
Abhiram Das from Bihar has been credited for installing the Ram Lalla idol inside the Babri Masjid on December 22, 1949.
Das was named as the prime accused in the FIR registered in connection with the case on December 23.
Gurudutt Singh
Thakur Gurudutt Singh was the city magistrate of Faizabad in 1949 when the Ram Lalla idol was placed inside the Babri Masjid.
He is said to have offered prayers inside Babri Masjid on December 23, a day after the idol was placed.?
?After Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru directed Chief Minister Govind Ballabh Pant to ensure that the idol was removed, Guru Dutt stood firm and did not let the CM enter Faizabad-Ayodhya.
Thakur Gurudutt Singh was given the title of India's first karsevak" by VHP leader Ashok Singhal.
KK Nair (KK Nayyar)
Kandankalathil Karunakaran Nair (KK Nair) was the District Magistrate of Faizabad in 1949 when the Ram Lalla idol was placed inside the Babri Masjid. The Kerala-born ICS officer was the senior of Singh and was instrumental in defying the order to remove the idol from inside the mosque complex.
Nair refused to implement the order citing the possibility of a riot but was suspended for his defiant actions.
Though he was later reinstated, following a court order, Nair resigned from service and became a lawyer in the Allahabad High Court. He later joined Jana Sangh and became an MP from Bahraich in 1967.
Kameshwar Chaupal
Kameshwar Chaupal, a Dalit man from Bihar is credited with laying the foundation stone for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
In November 1989 Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had allowed Hindu organisations to lay the foundation stone near the disputed site and on November 9, Chaupal who had been given the responsibility of taking care of guests, was told by Ashok Singhal that he had to lay the foundation stone.
Kothari brothers?
Ram Kothari and Sharad Kothari, two brothers from Kolkata were members of the RSS and in October 1990 they were among the first to enter the premises and hoisted a flag. The brothers, aged 20 and 22 were shot dead by the administration for allegedly creating a nuisance in Ayodhya.
Their bullet-ridden bodies were found in a lane near the Hanuman Garhi temple, which is very close to the Ram Temple and today the lane where they died in Ayodhya started being called Shahid Marg.?
